  • Prep Time: 5 minutes

  • Yield: 1 serving
microwave baked potato fresh from the microwave

Ingredients

  • 1 large russet potato 🥔
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil (optional) 🫒
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt 🧂
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 🌿
  • Your favorite toppings: butter, cheese, sour cream, chives, bacon bits! 🧈🧀🥓

Instructions

  1. First, wash your potato thoroughly and dry it off. You don’t want any dirt ruining your perfect bite! 🚿✨
  2. Then, using a fork, poke holes all around the potato. This helps steam escape and prevents a potato explosion in your microwave! 🔥💥
  3. Next, rub a little olive oil over the skin (optional) and sprinkle some salt for that crispy texture! 😋
  4. Now, place the potato on a microwave-safe plate and pop it into the microwave. Cook on high for about 4 minutes. ⏳
  5. Turn the potato over and microwave for another 4 minutes. If it’s still firm, keep microwaving in 1-minute intervals until soft. 🥔💨
  6. Once done, carefully remove it (it’s hot!) and let it rest for a minute. Slice it open, fluff the inside, and load up those toppings! 🧈🧀🥓

How to Make a Microwave Baked Potato

First, grab a nice, big potato 🥔—Russet potatoes work best for that fluffy texture! Next, wash it really well because, let’s be honest, nobody likes a dirty potato! 😆 Then, poke a few holes in it using a fork—this helps steam escape, so it doesn’t explode (yes, that can happen! 😱).

After that, place the potato on a microwave-safe plate and pop it into the microwave. 🏆 Set your microwave to high and cook it for about 5 minutes. Next, flip the potato and cook for another 3–5 minutes, depending on the size. Want a softer potato? Just add another minute or two! ⏳🔥

Once it’s done, let it sit for a minute (hot potatoes can be tricky to handle! 😅). Then, slice it open and fluff the inside with a fork. What’s more, now comes the best part—toppings! 🧈🧀 Add butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, or anything your heart desires! 🎉

Why You’ll Love This Method

In addition to being super quick, this method gives you a perfect, fluffy inside and a slightly crispy skin! 🥔❤️ It’s also a lifesaver when you’re short on time but still want something filling and delicious. Plus, you won’t need to heat up the whole oven—perfect for those hot days! ☀️🔥

Final Thoughts

A microwave baked potato is the ultimate hack for a fast and satisfying meal! 🎉 Whether you’re making it for lunch, dinner, or just a snack, it’s always a great choice. Give it a try, and then let us know your favorite toppings! 🥔✨

FAQs ❓

Do you peel plums before baking?

It depends on how you’re using them. When making jelly or jam, yes you should peel plums. When making this recipe, or other recipes where you roast or bake plums, leave the skin on. They add nice color and shape, plus a bit of tartness that contrasts nicely with the sweetness of the plum flesh.

What is the difference between a tart and a plum galette with puff pastry?

I took a few liberties in naming this plum dessert a “tart.” Mine is actually not really a tart or a galette. Technically, tarts are baked in a very specific style pan (a tart pan) while a galette is a French pastry that’s basically a freeform pie. For a galette, pie crust is rolled flat, filled with lots of fresh fruit (sliced or chopped) then the edges of the crust are folded over the edge of the fruit, overlapping around 1 inch. My tarts are freeform, but with a thinner, puff pastry crust instead of a pie crust. In addition, mine don’t have as much fruit as a typical galette, and the edge of the crust isn’t folded on top of the fruit.

How do you keep the bottom of mini plum tarts from getting soggy?

I’ve never had an issue with these tarts getting soggy. Don’t make them more than 8 hours ahead and make sure to cook them until the crust is crispy.
